18 UG Students Accused of Disturbances Granted GH¢50k Bail
The 18 students from the University of Ghana, who were arrested for allegedly causing disturbances on campus, have been granted bail in the amount of GH¢50,000.
The Ghana Police Service detained the students last week after a clash on the University of Ghana campus on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.
The 18 individuals were part of a group of past and present students who were protesting the University’s new residential policy, which prohibits continuing students from occupying the Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah residential halls to make way for level 100 and graduate students
Following their arrest, the students were remanded into custody for unlawful conduct and brought before an Accra Circuit Court. On February 20, the students appeared before Circuit Court 4, where they were granted bail with two common sureties without justification.
Counsel for 16 of the 18 students, Albert Quashigah, spoke after the court proceedings and stated that their only business that day was to seek bail for the students, which was granted. He further explained that they were taking steps to execute the bail that had been granted.
Albert Quashigah expressed concern that the court’s administrative process could cause delays in executing the bail, which would result in the students not being released by the end of the day. He hoped that they would be able to execute the bail and free the students so they could return to their studies.
